The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) will be an official competition venue and will help host up to 2,700 student athletes as they prepare for the opening ceremonies of the Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games. UFV joins the City of Abbotsford and the Abbotsford School District as funding partners for the event this July.

“The Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games is about showcasing our community and highlighting the many great sporting venues and facilities that are available here, and we are delighted that the University has accepted this opportunity with such a positive response,” said Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games President, Steve Carlton. “The support from the University has been unwavering since Abbotsford submitted its bid to host these Games. We are ecstatic that every competitor will get to see the great facility and campus grounds here at some point in July.”

As one of the competition venues, the University of the Fraser Valley will host indoor volleyball. Volleyball competition takes place in two gyms at the Abbotsford campus on July 22 and 23 with the finals and medal presentations taking place on July 24.

The university will also host 2,700 student athletes on the Abbotsford campus as they gather and parade to the Opening Ceremony on July 21. The athletes, coaches, and officials will march across the campus green to the Abbotsford Entertainment Centre where the ceremony will take place in the evening.

“UFV is thrilled to support and engage our communities in the Fraser Valley and across the province by hosting the athletes and their families as they gather and compete in the Games,” said Mark Evered, President of UFV. “We are committed, and are working closely with the organizing committee and with the other Funding Partners, the City of Abbotsford, and the Abbotsford School District, to ensure the Games are a tremendous success showcasing this beautiful and prosperous region. The University has contributed a number of valuable services to ensure that the Games are a memorable experience for all. The first class competition facilities will allow indoor volleyball to flourish over the course of the event.”

The university will also be supporting the volunteer drive and recruiting strategy by promoting the opportunity to students and staff and allowing the recruitment of Games volunteers on-site at events and athletic competitions leading up to July.

The Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games will take place from July 21 to 24. The sport venues for the Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games were confirmed in October 2015.  Eighteen sports will take place at a total 24 venues in Abbotsford and the surrounding area. See bcgames.org for a complete list of sports and competition venues.
