Sophie Schmidt and the Canadian women’s soccer team are one win away from qualifying for the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.

Schmidt, a 23-year-old midfielder from Abbotsford, helped Team Canada finish first in Group A at the CONCACAF women’s Olympic qualifying tournament at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver.

On Monday, she scored a goal in Canada’s 5-1 win over Costa Rica to clinch first place in the group. The host Canadians had previously beaten Haiti (6-0 last Thursday) and Cuba (2-0 on Saturday).

On Friday in the tournament semifinals, Canada will face the loser of Tuesday’s Group B match between the United States and Mexico (that result was unavailable at press time). If they win that game, they’ll claim one of two CONCACAF Olympic berths.
