For the first time since 2019, the MEI Eagles senior boys volleyball team hit the court and last weekend the team proved they remain a powerhouse in the province.

The Eagles and several other teams competed at the 2021 UFV Cascades Men’s High School Tournament, which ran on Sept. 17 and 18 at the UFV Athletic and Recreation Centre on the Abbotsford campus.

The playoff tournament saw the top eight teams square off in the opening round and move on to either a winning or losing bracket depending on the first round result.

MEI opened with a 2-0 (25-13 and 25-15) win over the Langley Christian Secondary junior team and then also take down the LCS senior team 2-0 (25-23 and 25-20). The pair of wins advanced the Eagles to the tournament final, which saw them defeat Kelowna Secondary 2-0 (25-12 and 25-20).

Eagles players Sam Brandsma and Thomas Frew were named tournament all-stars.

The LCS senior team finished in third place. The Abbotsford Christian Secondary Knights also participated in the event, losing 2-0 (13-25 and 15-25) to the LCS seniors in round one. ACS then lost 2-0 (23-25 and 21-25) to the LCS juniors. ACS also dropped a 2-1 (23-25, 25-23 and 11-15) decision to Fraser Heights to finish eighth place at the event.

High school volleyball competition begins later this year.
