MEI Eagles excel at Spartan Cup

Abbotsford school named Aggregate Winner at volleyball event

The MEI Eagles impressed at the annual Spartan Cup, hosted by Trinity Western University over the weekend.

The tournament helps kick off the high school volleyball season, and featured 78 teams from all over the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.

Divisions at the event included: senior boys, senior girls, junior boys and junior girls.

The Eagles earned the Aggregate Winner trophy at the event, for having the top overall showing as a school. It’s the second straight year that MEI has won that honour.

MEI finished first in the junior boys, third in junior girls, third in senior boys and fifth in senior girls.

The junior boys dominated in pool play, with wins over Langley Christian and Surrey Christian. The playoff round saw the Eagles defeat Abbotsford Christian, Langley Christian and then Pacific Academy 2-0 in the gold medal game (26-24 and 25-14) to take home the top spot.

MEI’s junior girls finished first in pool play, and then beat Abbotsford Christian in the playoffs. The club fell in the final four to Semiahmoo, but then bounced back in the third place game to finish bronze.

The senior boys picked up wins over Credo Christian and DW Poppy in round robin play, and then advanced to the final four but lost to Langley Christian. The Eagles then defeated Langley Fundamental to take home bronze.

The senior girls defeated Unity Christian to open the playoff round, but then fell to Earl Marriott in the quarter-finals. MEI then defeated Langley Christian in the fifth place game.

Other Abbotsford schools participating at the event included: Yale, W.J. Mouat and Abbotsford Christian.
