Last weekend saw five soccer teams from Kelowna, Mission, Victoria and Abbotsford hit the fields for the first-ever Magnuson Ford Mariners FC Special Olympics BC soccer tournament.

The Kelowna squad went undefeated going 4-0 in the round robin, while Mission posted a 3-1 record to finish second. Strong efforts from the Victoria entry and two teams from Abbotsford rounded out the tourney.

Shawn Fevens, the manager of sport for Special Olympics BC, said the event was a strong “early-bird opportunity for teams starting the season and wanting to get a competition under their belts,” as well as additional preparation for teams gearing up to play in the 2013 SOBC Summer Games in Langley.

Magnuson Ford Mariners FC has a partnership with Abbotsford's Special Olympics branch, offering technical support to help coach and program development.
