A celebration of female hockey is set to take over five different ice rinks in Abbotsford this weekend.
The inaugural Lorne Rowan Memorial Tournament will see 25 teams from all across the province battle it out for bragging rights.
Lorne Rowan was a former assistant coach with the Abbotsford Ice female hockey program and died in November of 2016. He coached hockey teams for both his son and daughter, and his sister Carol Rowan has been one of the key organizers to help form the tournament.
“The hockey community, the business community and general population of Abbotsford has been incredible and the response from teams coming in from Williams Lake to Penticton to Vancouver Island to Kamloops and all points in between has been amazing,” she said. “Teams were turned away because there are not enough ice to accommodate all wanting to play here.”
Games run from Friday to Sunday at Abbotsford Recreation Centre, Centre Ice, Matsqui Recreation Centre, Abbotsford Centre and MSA Arena. Players from atom, bantam, pee wee and midget are all participating at the event.
Tournament finals run all day Sunday at the Abbotsford Centre.
