Hansen falls to McNair in Timberwolves Classic final

Hurricanes senior boys team fails in bid to three-peat at annual tournament

The Rick Hansen Hurricanes nearly defended their championship at the Timberwolves Classic basketball tournament, but narrowly fell 69-65 to Richmond's McNair Marlins at Bateman Secondary on Saturday.

The teams were tied at 15 after the first quarter, but the Marlins led 32-27 at the half. Hansen fought back in the third to only trail 48-47, but the Marlins were better in the game's final frame.

The Hurricanes won the 2016 tournament by defeating Burnaby's St. Thomas More. They also won the 2015 tournament after beating the host Timberwolves in the final.

Hansen defeated Brookswood on Thursday, Bateman on Friday and Steveston earlier on Saturday. McNair's path to the final saw them defeat Valleyview on Thursday, Lord Byng on Friday and McMath earlier on Saturday.

The host Bateman Timberwolves opened the event with a 79-50 win over the Abbotsford Panthers on Thursday, falling to the Hurricanes on Friday and also losing to Bodwell on Saturday.

The Panthers fell to Bateman on Thursday, and then lost to Brookswood to close out their tournament on Friday.
