Four Abbotsford nominees for Sport BC awards

Four members of the Abbotsford sporting community have been nominated for Sport BC Athlete of the Year awards.

Jacob Doerksen is up for Sport BC's university athlete of the year after wrapping up a stellar career with the TWU Spartans.

Four members of the Abbotsford sporting community have been nominated for Sport BC Athlete of the Year awards.

Jacob Doerksen is up for university athlete of the year after a stellar season with the Trinity Western Spartans men's basketball team. He was named a Canada West all-star for the fifth time after averaging 21.6 points and 7.8 rebounds, and he led the Spartans to a national silver medal. He's up against Helen Crofts (track and field, SFU) and Shanice Marcelle (volleyball, UBC) for the award.

Will Quiring of the Columbia Bible College men's volleyball team has been nominated for the college athlete of the year award, along with Li Liang (badminton, Douglas College) and Preston Tucker (volleyball, UBC-Okanagan). Quiring capped a terrific rookie season with the Bearcats by earning MVP honours at the CCAA nationals, as he led CBC to gold.

Wrestler Sunny Dhinsa is a candidate for the high school athlete of the year, along with Adam Keenan (track and field, Lambrick Park) and Reiner Theil (basketball/football, Vancouver College). The W.J. Mouat grad won his third consecutive B.C. high school title in 2011, and went on win four national titles in three age classes.

Jim Mitchell, a longtime wrestling and football coach at Mouat, is up for the official of the year award for his work as an Olympic-level wrestling ref. Terry Mosdell (lacrosse, Surrey) and Wayne Van Osterhout (rowing, Victoria) are also nominated.

The Sport BC awards gala is set for March 8 at the River Rock Show Theatre in Richmond.
