Abbotsford grappler Sunny Dhinsa continued his amazing run of dominance at the national level, winning a pair of gold medals at the Canadian Juvenile/Cadet Wrestling Championships in Windsor, Ont. last weekend.
Dhinsa won the 130 kg freestyle division in the juvenile (18-and-under) age class, and added a second title in the Greco-Roman discipline.
The twin triumphs bring Dhinsa’s national title total in various age classes to 11. Three weeks ago in Edmonton, the 17-year-old senior at W.J. Mouat Secondary won both the junior (20-and-under) freestyle and the senior Greco-Roman crowns.
Dhinsa was hardly the only local standout at juvenile nationals. Jasmit Phulka of Rick Hansen Secondary won freestyle silver at 76 kg, while Mandeep Gill of Abby Collegiate took bronze at 69 kg. Hansen’s Ravneet Sandhu finished second to Dhinsa in the heavyweight Greco-Roman competition.
A pair of female wrestlers from Yale Secondary, Serena Kind and Zandri Botha, brought home silver medals. Kind finished second at 60 kg, while Botha was the runner-up at 70 kg.
In the cadet (16-and-under) division, Hansen’s Joban Phulka won the national title in the 72 kg class.
Other local cadet medallists included Matt Dignan (silver, 50 kg), Austin Batra (silver, 69 kg), Rajin Gill (silver, 80 kg), Dave Sharma (bronze, 42 kg) and Baldeep Gill (bronze, 58 kg).
