Kayla Bruce of the University of the Fraser Valley women's volleyball team has been named the PacWest female athlete of the year.

Bruce, a fourth-year middle, is the first Cascades women's volleyball player to win the award, which recognizes the top athlete across all sports five sports (basketball, soccer, volleyball, badminton and golf) played in the provincial college league. UFV basketball players Jamie Born, Lauren Alonzo and Michelle Buhler all previously won the award when the league was known as the BCCAA, before the Cascades hoops teams moved up to the CIS in 2006.

Bruce led the PacWest in total offence, averaging 4.1 points per set. She adds the award to an impressive haul this season which already includes the PacWest female volleyball MVP and first-team all-star honours, a CCAA All-Canadian nod, and a first-team all-star award at the national championships.

The Surrey native led the UFV women to their best season ever, highlighted by a silver medal at provincials at a bronze at nationals.

“Kayla was a large part of the reason for our team’s success this year,” UFV head coach Dennis Bokenfohr said. “Her leadership on the court was outstanding.”
