Grade 8 AA Huskies squad ends another successful season

Luke Szmutko was named MVP for the Huskies.

Abbotsford Middle School’s Grade 8 AA football team had another successful season, finishing third overall in the province. To wrap up the season, the Huskies recently handed out their individual awards at a season-ending banquet.

This year’s recipients are: most inspirational player: Eli Chutskoff; coaches’ award: Amsuman Nair; rookie of the year: Carlin Dick; best offensive lineman: Akshay Kalia; most improved: Caleb Woodruffe; best defensive back:  Shawn Wesley; best receiver:  Karn Brar; best defensive lineman: Gavin Smith; best offensive back: Hayden Viala; Barry Stewart coaches’ award:  Burke Scheirer; best linebacker: Wayne Hooper; special teams award: Jeetpreet Singh; and most valuable player: Luke Szmutko.

Shooting for gold

Abbotsford’s Jarod Algra will compete for Team BC in biathlon at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George next month.

Algra was among the eight athletes named to the team based on results from the  North American Cup #1 biathlon event held in Canmore, Alta., last month.

Over the next two months, athletes named to Team BC will train with their home clubs and then participate in a pair of provincial biathlon events before going to the Canada Winter Games:  BC Cup 1 in Quesnel from Jan. 3 to 4 and BC Cup 2 in Whistler from Jan. 24 to 25.

The biathlon competitions at the Canada Winter Games take place from February 13 to 20 at the Otway Nordic Centre.

Try lacrosse

Abbotsford Warriors are hosting a pair of “Come Try Lacrosse” and registration sessions on Jan. 18 and Jan. 25 at the AgReg Building.

All players — new and returning — are welcome to participate.  There will also be in-person registration available for the upcoming season. Session times are: mini/tyke 1-2 p.m.; novice/peewee 2-3 p.m.; and bantam/midget 3-4 p.m.
