Abbotsford will be well represented at the Western Canadian U16 Challenge Cup later this month.

The Team BC U16 hockey club at the Western Canadian U16 Challenge Cup later this month is set to have a distinct Abbotsford flavour.

One Abbotsford resident and three Yale Hockey Academy players were named to the club on Tuesday for the event which runs Oct. 18 to 23 in Calgary.

The Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup features the highest rated players in the U16 age category representing the four western provinces.

Abbotsford's Austin Herron, who also plays for Yale, was one of six defenceman named to the club, with Yale players Roman Basran, Alex Swetlikoff and Joshua Williams also suiting up at the tournament. Basran is a goaltender, while Swetlikoff and Williams are both forwards.

Also competing at the event are teams representing Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Team BC kicks off the event on Oct. 19 against Team Manitoba. They play Team Saskatchewan on Oct. 20 and Team Alberta on Oct. 21. The tournament wraps up Oct. 23 with the bronze and gold medal matchups.

Williams was picked by the Medicine Hat Tigers with the fifth overall pick in the WHL bantam draft, while Herron (Moose Jaw Warriors), Basran (Kelowna Rockets) and Swetlikoff (Seattle Thunderbirds) were all third-round picks.
