The Abbotsford Phantoms earned second place at the U14 fastpitch provincials earlier this month.

The Abbotsford Phantoms U14C female fastpitch team wrapped up a season to remember earlier this month.

Abbotsford finished second overall in B.C. after a strong showing at the 2017 U14C Provincial Championships, which ran from July 7 to 9 in Port Alberni.

After finishing the regular season with a perfect record of 31 wins and no losses, including tournament wins in Fleetwood and Mission, the Phantoms won the district championship in Langley to represent the Fraser Valley at the provincials.

Squaring off against 15 other teams at the event, Abbotsford opened with a 5-2 win over the host Port Alberni Blazers, but then suffered their first loss of the season to North Surrey. They bounced back with wins over Gordon Head, Campbell River and the Kelowna Blue Jays to advance to double knockout round.

The Phantoms then beat Mission 9-5, lost to the Kelowna Elite 8-1 and then beat the Kelowna Blue Jays 5-3 to move on to the provincial final.

The gold-medal game saw the Kelowna Elite edge Abbotsford 3-2.

The club finished with a record of 37 wins and three losses for 2017, and Phantoms coaches Jim Agassiz and Wayne Maurice said they were proud of the girls’ efforts.
