An epic defensive battle resulted in heartbreak for the Abbotsford Panthers junior varsity football team in Chilliwack on Wednesday.

Abbotsford battled the Vernon Panthers in the AA JV semi-final, and the game remained without a single point until late in the fourth quarter.

Vernon connected on a field goal to go up 3-0 with 2:31 left in the game, and on the ensuing drive Abbotsford turned the ball over to spell the end of the season for the locals.

With the 3-0 win, Vernon now moves on to the AA JV final game.

Abbotsford’s best scoring opportunity came late in the first quarter, when they got inside the 20 but turned the ball over on downs.

The loss ended what was an exceptional season for Abbotsford, who finished with a perfect record of five wins and zero losses in the regular season. They outscored the opposition 186-6 in those five games.

Abbotsford opened the JV AA playoffs on Nov. 15 with a 29-0 win over South Kamloops.
