Sports in brief: UFV hoopsters hosting Shoot for the Cure fundraisers
The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team is hosting “Shoot for the Cure” fundraisers in partnership with the B.C./Yukon chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
The first event is Thursday, Jan. 24 at Finnegan’s Pub. Tickets are $15 and includes a meal, and the Cascades are asking local businesses to donate prizes for a silent auction. All proceeds will go to the CBCF.
Saturday, Jan. 26 is the UFV women’s fifth annual Shoot for the Cure game. The UNBC Timberwolves are the opponent, and the game tips off at 5 p.m. at the Envision Athletic Centre.
The Cascades, ranked No. 1 in the nation, have raised over $5,000 over the course of four previous fundraising games, selling Shoot for the Cure T-shirts, CBCF pins, water bottles and ribbons.

VIRTANEN, REVEL EXCEL
Abbotsford hockey players Jake Virtanen and Matt Revel helped Team Pacific to a fifth-place finish at the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in Victoriaville/Drummondville, Que. earlier this month.
The tournament brought together the top players in the world born 1996 or later, and featured five Canadian regional teams along with entries from Sweden, Finland, Russia, Slovakia and the United States.
Team Pacific finished the round robin with a 3-1 record, defeating Russia in overtime (8-7), Finland in a shootout (5-4), Team West in overtime (4-3) and losing to Sweden (6-3). They beat Team Ontario 7-6 in the fifth-sixth placing game.
Virtanen racked up five goals and two assists in five games, while Revel registered two assists. Both play in the WHL – Virtanen with the Calgary Hitmen, and Revel with the Saskatoon Blades.
LEARN ABOUT JUDO
The Abbotsford Judo Club is hosting a judo discovery day on Saturday, Jan. 26.
The event runs 1-3 p.m. at the facility (31410 Maclure Rd.), and will include a demonstration, and a chance for visitors to join in an introductory class and play judo-related games.
Admission is free, but those who wish to guarantee a spot should pre-register by calling 604-852-8014.
ROLLER HOCKEY REGISTRATION
The Abby Ag-Rec Roller Hockey League is hosting a registration session on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Sports Zone (33147 South Fraser Way).
The sign-up runs from 12 to 2 p.m. The league is for boys and girls age 6-16.
Games run Thursday and Friday nights, from April 14 to June 17. Cost is $150 per player, and includes a jersey and team/individual pictures.

All Star Wrestling returns to the Abbotsford Arts Centre on Friday, Jan. 25.
