Dhillon wins national soccer title

Manveer Dhillon of Abbotsford won a national U16 club soccer championship with Surrey United last month in Charlottetown, PEI.

Dhillon’s squad edged Ontario’s Erin Mills 1-0 on penalty kicks in the championship game.

“It was really nerve-wracking, waiting for every shot,” said Dhillon, a Grade 11 student at W.J. Mouat Secondary. “But we had confidence we were going to win.”

It’s the second national title for Dhillon, a striker who dreams of earning an NCAA soccer scholarship. Two years ago, he won gold with the U14 B.C. provincial team.

“It feels good to know the first one wasn’t a fluke,” he said.
