Sports in brief: Dosanjh wins Canada West weekly award
Gagandeep Dosanjh of Abbotsford has been named the Canada West male athlete of the week.
The UBC Thunderbirds striker scored five goals and assisted on three others as his team won a pair of games over UNBC on the weekend. Dosanjh now leads Canada West in goals (11), assists (seven) and points (18), and his 11 goals are already the most by a Canada West player in six years.
PINNING, PAULS HONOURED BY UFV
Donna Pinning and Aaron Pauls have been named UFV's athletes of the week.
Pauls, a fourth-year member of the men's golf team, helped the Cascades win the PacWest conference title on the weekend. His putt on the final hole clinched the title, and he finished second overall.
Pinning, a fifth-year defender with the women's soccer team, scored her team-high fifth goal in a 2-0 win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday.
ZACHER'S THREE TDs PACE T-WOLVES PAST ROADRUNNERS
The Robert Bateman Timberwolves Grade 10 football squad knocked off the Mission Roadrunners 28-21 last week.
Austen Zacher carried the ball 23 times for 168 yards and three touchdowns for the undefeated T-Wolves (3-0), while defensive end Tyson Gibson recovered a fumble and returned it 35 yards for a major. Other standouts on the defensive side of the ball were McKenzie Johnson, Josh Beckerleg and Nathan Eeg.
LATE DEFENSIVE STOP KEY FOR RAVENS
The Eugene Reimer Ravens edged Pitt Meadows 16-14 in Grade 8 football action last week.
Dylan Manocha rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns, and the Ravens came up with a huge red-zone stand late in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. Player of the week awards went to Manocha (offence), Bobby Narang (defence), Karn Minhas (lineman) and Austin Brar (coaches award).
