Canadian women's hoopsters fall to U.S. in Olympics quarter-finals
The Canadian women's basketball team ran into a juggernaut in the Olympic quarter-finals, falling 91-48 to the top-ranked Americans.
The U.S. came in having won 38 consecutive Olympic games, including the last four gold medals, and they dominated the Cinderella Canadians, who had advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time.
Mission native Kim Smith turned in another team-leading offensive performance, scoring 13 points. Fellow Mission product Teresa Gabriele notched two points and four assists in what was likely the final game of her international career.
The Americans had a balanced attack with five players reaching double digits in points: Diana Taurasi (15), Sylvia Fowles (12), Candace Parker (12), Maya Moore (11) and Angel McCoughtry (11).
