Abbotsford’s Sophie Schmidt has been officially named to Canada’s Olympic women’s soccer team.

Schmidt was on the 18-player roster which was unveiled Monday.

At 23 years old, the midfielder is already one of Canada’s most experienced international players. She made her Olympic debut in Beijing in 2008, and her 74 caps are sixth-most on the team.

She helped Canada qualify for the London Games in January, as they won silver at the CONCACAF qualifying tourney in Vancouver.

Canada, ranked No. 7 in the world, is in a tough Olympic group, featuring two nations – champion Japan and third-place Sweden – who had podium finishes at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. South Africa is the fourth member of the group. Canada opens against Japan on July 25.
