UFV spiker Bruce wins PacWest player of year
Abbotsford's college volleyball programs picked up a bushel of PacWest awards on Wednesday, highlighted by Kayla Bruce winning conference player of the year.
Bruce, a fourth-year middle with the University of the Fraser Valley women's squad, paced the PacWest in total offence, averaging 4.1 points per set. She also led the league in aces (78) and was third in blocks (87), and earned a first team all-star nod in addition to her MVP award.
“This was a monster season for Kayla,” Cascades head coach Dennis Bokenfohr said. “She may be our most consistent player as she records great statistics every night.”
UFV outside hitter Jenna Evans and libero Brittany Stewart were second team all-stars, while Krista Hogenwoning was named to the all-rookie team.
The Cascades men's volleyball team saw Aaron Flanagan named to the second all-star team, while Adam Chaplin and Jon Dvorak were all-rookie teamers.
Across town at Columbia Bible College, the Bearcats' awards haul was headlined by Sadie Ball earning PacWest rookie of the year honours. Ball, an outside hitter out of MEI, was third in the league in both kills (277) and total offence (3.72 points per set), and she was also named to both the first all-star team and the all-rookie squad.
Ball was joined on the first all-star team by middle April van Wieren, and Jill Ratzlaff also made the cut for the all-rookie team.
The Bearcats men's volleyball team had a pair of first team all-stars in outside hitter Will Quiring and setter Jason Warkentin, while Matt Erickson earned all-rookie honours.
