JAMES, WIERKS HONOURED BY UFV
Basketball players Mike James and Sarah Wierks have been named the University of the Fraser Valley’s athletes of the week.
James, a fifth-year power forward, played a pivotal role off the bench to help the Cascades men earn a road split with the UVic Vikes last weekend. He notched six points, four rebounds and two blocked shots in a 79-70 win on Friday.
Wierks, a sophomore centre, registered a pair of double-doubles as the UFV women swept the Vikes.
The UFV basketball teams are on the road at Regina and Brandon this weekend.
Blue Corner Boxing Club head coach Ingo Schubert is making a return to the ring for an exhibition fundraiser tonight (Friday, Jan. 20).
Schubert’s last bout was in April 1994 – nearly 18 years ago. He’ll be lacing up the gloves to face Blue Corner boxer Calep Weitzel at Cascades Casino in Langley. The bout is part of the regular Friday Night Fights promotion, and doors open at 7:30 p.m. Schubert is raising funds for his son’s hockey team, the Abbotsford bantam A2 squad.
“I did the sport for a long time, so I’m not really nervous,” Schubert, 51, said with a chuckle. “I’m not in the shape I used to be in, but I’m in good enough shape, I think.”
