H.S. football playoff preview: Hawks primed for rematch with Fox
All four of Abbotsford's high school football teams are advancing to the playoffs at B.C. Place this weekend, and three of the four match-ups are actually rematches from earlier this season.
• Mouat vs. Terry Fox, 8 p.m. Friday
The No. 2-ranked Hawks crushed the Ravens 33-0 during AAA East league play, and Mouat coach Denis Kelly expects Fox to be an extremely motivated group.
"They didn't like that at all, and I think they'll take steps to rectify that," he said. "The playoffs are one-game seasons, and we have four of them. We have to take care of them one at a time."
• Bateman vs. Hugh Boyd, 12 p.m. Friday
The T-Wolves beat the Richmond squad 34-21 during non-conference play, but that was way back on Sept. 23. MacDonald expects to see a different look from Boyd this time around.
"Their coach said they were missing four starters in that game, so it'll probably be a different team we go up against in the Dome," the Bateman coach noted.
• Hansen vs. Seaquam, 7:30 p.m. Saturday
On Oct. 1, a huge first half powered the Seahawks to a 33-6 win over the Hurricanes. Hansen coach Gill said that a strong start is imperative in the post-season rematch.
"That's the thing we need to work on – having a good first quarter and first half, and go from there," Gill said. "They're a team I think we match up well against."
• Abby Collegiate vs. Handsworth, 12 p.m. Saturday
The Panthers and Royals haven't played yet this season, but Abby Collegiate bench boss Fujimura is very familiar with his Handsworth counterpart Jay Prepchuk.
"He always has a good game plan in place," Fujimura said. "They like to spread the ball around, they like to throw, and they like to counter. I think it's going to be a really tight and close game."
