Born and raised in the prairie town of Granum, Alberta, Ruth helped out in her father’s business, Roger’s Mercantile. Educated in Calgary at Mount Royal College, she started her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Crooked Creek, northern Alberta. Married in 1951, Ruth followed Clare’s career in the airforce to airbases all over the prairies until they came to the coast in 1958. First to New Westminster, then Chilliwack and finally settling on a small farm in Abbotsford. There she continued her teaching career and raised her family until her retirement in 1985.

After retirement Ruth enjoyed golfing and socializing over a scrabble board or puzzle with friends. She remained active in the community as a Director of Maplewood House and volunteered at the MSA Museum and with Learning Plus. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and Widows Helping Others (WHO). Ruth had a passion for music and playing the piano. Throughout her life she enjoyed dancing, reading and observing nature. Ruth loved to travel and made many trips with friends to locations throughout BC as well as a Maritime tour and a cruise to Hawaii.

Ruth’s outgoing nature and positive attitude resulted in many close friendships that she nurtured over the years. People who came into contact with her were touched by her gracious personality.

Ruth resided in Tsawwassen for her last year. Her family would like to thank the staff and her friends at the Waterford residence. In addition her family would like to thank the Palliative Care Team and the Delta Hospice Association. A special thanks to Dr. Craig Martin for his care and compassion.
