December 22, 2006

May 19, 1921 - Dec. 22, 2006

Peter Hubert of Abbotsford, B.C. went to be with the Lord December 22, 2006. He was born May 19, 1921 in Blumenfeld, Ukraine. He was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Helena Hubert; his first wife, Leni; his son, Peter; and his second wife, Anna (Thiessen). He is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Letkemann), her children, Peter, Monica (Perry) Solmonson,

Carolyn (Tom) Nichols, Linda (Mike) Wiebe and 8 grandchildren. He is also survived by Hank (Olwyn) Thiessen, Rudy (Lois) Thiessen, Al (Anita) Thiessen, and Elsie (Ben) Wiebe, 11 grandchildren and 20 great grand children.

In Germany he is survived by his daughter-in-law Hilda and her 3 children, Helene (Alex) Giesler, Waldemar (Svetlana), Peter Jr. and 5 great grand children. Also surviving is his brother Jacob in Edmonton and his 3 sons: Peter (Lilli), Jacob (Evi) and Dan (Joan) and their children. He is also survived by his sister Greta Banmann and family in Berlin, Germany.

Peter left Russia in 1943 on a trek to Poland where he was drafted into the German army. Before the collapse of Germany, his mother, wife and son were exiled to Arkangelsk, Russia. Peter, unaware of his family's whereabouts, was able to emigrate to Canada after the war. He served time as an indentured farm labourer (Reiseschuld) and then found employment in road and dam construction with heavy duty equipment in both Saskatchewan and Alberta. He then bought a truck and began his trucking company which lasted 30 years until he retired in 1984. He enjoyed his work although it meant he was often away from wife and home. Married in 1962 (Anna Thiessen) he was widowed in 2000 but then remarried in 2001 when he found Mary (Letkemann) and she provided the loving, caring partnership which carried him to the end.

Our thanks to Dr. Pankratz and the nursing staff at the Menno Hospital for their compassionate care.

Funeral service was held Thursday, December 28 at 11:00 at Eben-Ezer Mennonite Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MCC.
