Mary MIERAU

June 10, 2007

Mary Mierau passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord at Menno Hospital on June 10, 2007. She was born on November 24, 1919 in Guernsey, Saskatchewan to David and Sara Hiebert. Her family moved to Dalmeny, Saskatchewan in 1921 and later to Steinbach, Manitoba in 1937 where Mary completed her high school, Bible school and nurses training.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; brothers Harvey, Henry, Clarence, and Ben; and her sisters Margaret and Lydia. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Peter, his family, her sisters-in-law, Tina and Mildred, nieces and nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. In 1957 she began her nursing career as a Missionary Nurse in the Congo (later known as Zaire). Once back in Canada, she continued nursing in Manitoba and later at MSA Hospital and Menno Home in Abbotsford, BC. She was very creative and many of her hobbies included sewing, which she willing shared in the opportunities of the Ember Ladies at Grace Church. Music was also a great love of hers. She married Peter Mierau in 1995. Eventually Alzheimer’s became evident in Mary’s life, and because of her previous nursing experience, knew what this possible journey could be. She endured it with dignity and grace.

A public viewing will take place on Thursday, June 14, at Henderson's Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC from 7:00-9:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Maclure Mennonite Cemetery, 33965 Maclure Road, Abbotsford, BC on Friday, June 15, 2007 at 12:00 p.m. with a memorial service following at 1:30 p.m. at Grace church at 2087 McMillian Road, Abbotsford, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to the Gideon's or to a charity of your choice.

Special thanks are extended to the staff of the Cottage where Mary first lived after she became ill and more recently the Menno Hospital for their wonderful care of her. She was so grateful for Dad’s loving care for her in her declining years and very much appreciated everyone’s kindness to her. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Gideon’s or to a charity of your choice.
