LILY VAN DER KOOY

March 19, 2004

Lily van der Kooy, 88, died in her White Rock home March 19, 2004. She was a long-time Abbotsford area resident and teacher. She taught in Matsqui, Sumas and Bradner during the 1950's and 60's as a relief teacher for elementary school principals.

Lily was the third child, following Cyril and Harold, of Leonard and Lillian Smith. She was born at home in the Matsqui railway station where her family lived while her mother served as station agent. She graduated from high school in the village of Matsqui, attended normal school and eventually earned a Bachelor of Education from UBC.

Lily married Jack Mahoney in 1938, settling in Matsqui to raise four children; Lenore, Bill, Janice and Arlene.

In 1964 she moved to Kemano to teach. There she met and married Govert van der Kooy.

Lily is survived by her husband, her four children, her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She will be lovingly remembered.

A service marking her passing was held at the White Rock United Church March 21st.
