EVANS; Leonard

October 2, 1923 ~ November 26, 2016

Our Dad and Grandad was a man who was loved, is missed and will always be cherished. He grew up in Richmond where he did many intriguing and wonderful things. One of which was joining the Royal Canadian Air Force on his birthday in 1942. He was posted to multiple locations as a wireless operator including ten months in the Queen Charlotte Islands. He then volunteered to join the South Pacific Force, however the war ended before his deployment. Once back home he began to work his charm on his childhood sweetheart, Muriel Erskine, who quickly became the one and only love of his life. The two were married October 2, 1947. He was a man of much determination and curiosity. Ever the entrepreneur, in 1970 he and Muriel moved their family of five to Abbotsford to run their auto parts business, Wakefield Sperling. Their two sons Jim and Roy later joined the family business and as a team ran the company successfully until retirement. He enjoyed spending time with his much beloved family and treasured his travels, especially trips back to his parent’s homeland of Wales.  His passion for aviation led him to obtain his private pilot’s license in his 60's, always looking to the sky to see the con trails of the passing aircraft and trying to imagine where they were going. On Saturday November 26, after 93 years of great adventure, learning, setbacks, courage and mostly love, Len died at the home he once shared with his wife.  He has left behind three children, Jim (Rene), Roy (Sherry) and Cathryn (Derek) Thomas, along with his three cherished granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Len was a man of great honour who loved hard with his giant and full heart. The most devoted of husbands, the most supportive of fathers, and the epitome of the word gentleman. Dad will remain in our hearts forever and we can carry on, knowing he is now with his love he has missed so much. We would like to thank Valley Life Line and the first responders who tirelessly attended to him at his home and the caring staff at ARH. It didn't go unnoticed! A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 2:00 pm at 35410 Doneagle Place, Abbotsford, BC. Tributes and condolences may be left at:
