SCHMIDT, George Cornelius

Nov. 21, 1938 - Feb. 9, 2009

"… the Lord who created you says: 'Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine'." Isaiah 43:1

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of George Schmidt on February 9, 2009, with his family at his side. George was welcomed by his heavenly Father into a brand-new and everlasting life to continue to worship Him as he had done for most of his life here on earth. He will be sadly missed by Karen, loving wife of 44 years; children Robert [Nancy] Schmidt, Karis [Jeff] Boetto and Rachel [Jeremy] Young; treasured grandchildren Cypress & River; Rylan & Jase; Savannah, Micah & Lauren; sister Erika [John], and brother Manfred. George's teaching career spanned thirty-eight years, beginning at Bethel Bible Institute and continuing on when the school merged with MBBI to become Columbia Bible School (now CBC). George lived life to the brim, and enjoyed many activities, including his long-time involvement with Kinghaven, a treatment centre for alcoholics and addicts. George had the capacity to look past the surface and see the person. He believed in the goodness of others, whether seen or present only as potential. "Witness is Withness" he said; and he consistently lived the talk. His life on earth has ended, but his legacy is rich and wide-spread! The family would like to thank Dr. Collingridge as well as the staff at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre for the loving, compassionate care they provided for George during his final, earthly days.

The family is grateful for the outpouring of love, support and prayers during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations or pledges to the 'George & Karen Schmidt Leadership Scholarship' in George's memory will be greatly appreciated. For further information, please contact Columbia Bible College at 604.853.3358 extension 344.

A public viewing will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Level Ground Mennonite Church (formerly West Abbotsford Mennonite Church; 31216 King Road, Abbotsford) at 10 am followed by a graveside service at Greendale Cemetery at 11:30 am. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm at Level Ground Mennonite Church followed by a reception at Columbia Bible College, Dining Room (2940 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford).
