Elizabeth Balzer

December 25, 2006

May 21,1923 – Dec. 25, 2006

Elizabeth passed away at home surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her parents, Jakob and Luise Janzen, her husband of one year, Heinrich Reimer, her brother, Henry, sister-in-law- Sophie, and her daughter, Margie. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, David; her brother, Jakob (Maria) Janzen; sister-in-law, Kathe Janzen; her children, Louise Reimer; Connie (Walter) Rempel; Jake (Mary); David (Cheryl); Kathy (Greg) Hisdal; Gerry (Connie); and Hans Froese, whom she fostered for several years after his mother's death in childbirth. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth was born in Neuhalbstadt, Russia, emigrated to Paraguay, and then to Canada in 1954. She was a long time active member of the M.B. Church. Hers was a faith in action with many involvements, from deacons to kitchen stewards.

Her employment outside the home was varied. It included janitorial, catering, MCC store managing, casket making, and supportive care services for MCC, as well as others.

Elizabeth will be greatly missed by her immediate family, as well as many relatives and friends whose lives she has impacted over the years. Her love and concern, as well as her cooking, will be missed. Elizabeth’s motto was not words but actions: over 30 years of Sunday lunches open to family and friends and relatives is but one example.

The family expresses special thanks to Dr. Winner and the Palliative Care Team for their care and support.

The funeral was held at the Clearbrook MB Church on December 29, 2006. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Mennonite Central Committee would be appreciated.
