SMITH; David F.

David passed away peacefully at home, at the age of 99 on October 3, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Pat; his daughters, Lesley, Joanne (Stuart), son, Scott (Karen); his 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. David was the youngest of 11 children born on the family farm at Shoal Lake, Manitoba. He attended the University of Manitoba graduating with a degree in Science of Agriculture in 1942. He served in the RCAF stationed in England, mainly in Yorkshire until 1946 during which time he met and married Pat in 1945 beginning a long and happy marriage of 71 years. Upon discharge, he worked for the government of Manitoba as an agricultural agent for a short time then left with their two year old daughter Lesley for a two year spell in New Zealand. After they returned to British Columbia, he attended UBC graduating with a Master’s Degree specializing in Poultry Science, becoming the nutritionist for Surrey Co-op Feeds, working on formulas and with the farmers to better production and improve the feed. He became well known in the agricultural circles. After working for the Co-op for 19 years and a brief spell with Buckerfield's, he co-founded Ritchie-Smith Feeds in 1968. They worked hard and it developed into a successful feed company. Upon retiring he was involved in various Christian activities and he had a deep spiritual life, his Christian faith growing stronger as he aged. We are very grateful for the excellent care he received in the hospital and the extraordinary efforts to allow him to die at home. A long good life well lived…we will miss you. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 11:00 am at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC. Tributes and condolences may be left at:
