Charles John McPherson passed away peacefully on Friday, May 18, 2007 in his 83rd year with his family at his side, at Mission Memorial Hospital in the Christine Morrison Hospice. Charlie was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 21, 1923 to Fred and Bella McPherson. Charlie’s ­brother Ken was born in 1925. In 1926, the family moved to Vancouver to the University area. Charlie attended University Hill School and graduated from U.B.C. in 1946 and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. He received a Bachelor of Education degree from U.B.C. in 1954 and in 1967 received his Masters Degree from University of Western Washington in Bellingham. Charlie taught 35 years for the Mission School District and was a very successful basketball coach, putting together several championship teams. In 1954, the Mission Senior Boys Basketball Team won the Provincial Championship. Charlie’s service to the community included: 18 years as Alderman on Mission District Council, 10 years on the Board of Trustees for Mission Memorial Hospital and 10 years as a member of the Kinsmen Club. He was a Charter Member of Golf Club and Duplicate Bridge Club in Mission. After retirement, Charlie con­tinued to volunteer as Heart Fund Chairman, Cancer Driver and Life Time Learning Member and President. In 1992 he received the Community Service Award and in 1995 received District of Mission Freeman for Outstanding Service to the Community.

Charlie will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Audrey; daughter, Cheryl Vanderlinde (Bart); grandsons Mike, Matt (Lindsay) and Mark; son, K.C. (Mindy) McPherson; grandchildren, Taylor, Amberley (Kevin) and great-grand­daughter Lola; son, Doug McPherson (Joan) and granddaughter, Amanda. He will also be missed by his brother Ken (Beryl) McPherson; niece Caelie (Derek) Smith of Portland, Maine, USA; sister-in-law Patsy (Dal) Needham and their children as well as numerous ­cousins and relatives throughout the Vancouver area, western Canada and Scotland.

A Celebration of Charlie’s life will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Northside Community Church – 33507 Dewdney Trunk Road, Mission, B.C.
