Betty Viola Speer, late of Abbotsford, BC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at the age of 85 at Menno Home with family by her side. Mom was born Betty Viola Leask, on June 28, 1932 in Cranbrook, BC, the oldest of two children. At a young age her family moved to Vancouver, BC where she went on to finish school, met and married Bill Hopkins and together they had four children. Mom went back to school as an adult to become a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked at Cariboo Lodge in Williams Lake, BC, and St. Mary's Hospital in New Westminster. After her retirement Mom kept busy with her growing family. With her love for dance and music, she went back to square dancing, sewing all of her own dresses until her health declined. Mom is survived by her son Jim, daughter Gail (Perry), daughter Shirley (Ron) and daughter Joanne, (Mike), grandchildren Jessica, Kimberley, Matt (Tessa), Harmony, Shawn (Tonja), Clintyn (Deanna), Darren & Shannon and five great grandchildren Zachery, Serena, Sarah, Caleb & Molly. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to the Mennonite Benevolent Society. Thank you to the staff at Menno Home for the excellent care they provided to Mom.
