Updated: Elderly man struck by vehicle in Aldergrove suffers serious injuries

73 year old victim evacuated by air ambulance

A 73-year-old man was rushed to hospital by helicopter with serious injuries after he was hit by a vehicle around 7 p.m. on Fraser Highway in Aldergrove Monday evening.

The highway between 273 and 276 Streets was closed to traffic while police investigated the accident involving a male pedestrian in his 70s.

Multiple witnesses to the accident told police the male pedestrian had been walking eastbound on the south side of Fraser Highway when he tried to cross to the north side of the road. The male did not make this attempt in a crosswalk and was struck by an eastbound Dodge Neon. The male was clad in all black and there is very little lighting in that area of Fraser Highway.

The pedestrian, a 73 year old Abbotsford man, was airlifted to hospital for treatment of his very serious injuries.

The driver remained at the scene.

Langley Traffic Services has assumed conduct of the investigation and ICARS attended to assist. Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the accident.

The Neon was towed from the scene and a mechanical inspection will be completed.

Police have been told of two males walking the same direction as the pedestrian victim and may have stopped to offer first aid. These two males did not remain at the scene to speak with investigators. Police appeal for these two individuals to contact Langley RCMP and provide their account of the collision.

If there are any other individuals who have information about this accident and have not yet spoken to police, they are asked to call Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.
