As crews continue to repair disrupted power grids, winds are expected to continue through the night.

Thousands of Fraser Valley residents are currently without power, due to strong winds moving across the region.

Almost 9,000 BC Hydro customers were waiting for power to be restored in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Mission, and Cloverdale as of 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Earlier, Environment Canada issues a wind warning for the eastern Fraser Valley reporting “strong outflow winds and cold wind chill values are expected or occurring.”

"Outflow winds between 30 and 80 km/h will combine with falling temperatures to produce wind chill values near minus 20 overnight,” the report said.

BC Hydro says the order in which crews restore outages is based on the number of customers being effected in each neighbourhood. Outages affecting a large neighbourhood will be dealt with first, then smaller neighbourhoods, and finally, outages affecting individual customers or small pockets of five customers or fewer.

"That can mean that 'newer' outages that affect much larger numbers of people may get tackled before an "older" outage in a smaller neighbourhood," BC Hydro's website says.
