Snow tow in whiteout conditions in Abbotsford

Tow truck operators brave extreme elements to recover vehicles

Blasting winds and drifting snow continue to make driving on Sumas Prairie roads extremely challenging on Wednesday.

The area between Whatcom Road and No. 3 Road on Highway 1 is the most challenging, with whiteout conditions continuing to occur through the afternoon and early evening.

Tow trucks were called out numerous times to recover vehicles that became bogged in deep drifts, some of which are several feet deep on side roads. The highway was generally clear, however visibility was limited by blowing snow.

Early Wednesday police closed Whatcom Road between Highway 1 and Vye Road, which by the afternoon remained impassable for even standard four-wheel drive vehicles. Although the route was cleared by heavy equipment earlier in the day, it had drifted back in by mid-afternoon, trapping at least one vehicle.
