A proposal to borrow $40 million to construction a new $40 million police building will be presented to Abbotsford council this week as part of the city’s budget process.

A draft budget now available online suggests the city could look to borrow $40 million in 2019 for what is described only as “new police building.” More information is likely to come out over three days of budget presentations this week at city hall.

Council has not publicly weighed in on the proposal; because the project is proposed to be funded through borrowing, a referendum would likely be needed. Next fall’s municipal election would be ideally timed for such a vote.

The News has asked the city for comment on the proposal.

The city’s budget meetings are open to the public and run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday beginning at 1 p.m. They can also be viewed online.
