The JAMES wastewater treatment plant is getting a $4.3 million boost from the federal government.

The federal government is upgrading Abbotsford and Mission’s joint-owned wastewater treatment plant with a $4.3 million boost.

The funding is going to the Joint Abbotsford Mission Environmental Systems Wastewater Treatment Plant’s (JAMES) ultraviolet disinfection project, to improve health and safety standards and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the City of Abbotsford, the ultraviolet disinfection project essentially replaces the current treatment process, involving chlorine gas and sulphur dioxide, with ultraviolet light.
