The Loblaws-owned Independent grocery store at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre on South Fraser Way is closing in September.

“The decision to close the store was not an easy one, as we value our customers and employees there,” Loblaws spokesperson Karen Gumbs wrote in an email.

“Unfortunately, the store has remained unprofitable and we don’t expect that to turn around.”

Gumbs said the company has given employees notice of the closure and will help with “this transition.” The News has asked how many part- and full-time employees will lose their jobs.

Loblaws plans to open a 39,000-square-foot No Frills grocer at the former Cannor Nursery location on Marshall Road near Riverside Road.

The confirmation of the closure came just one day after it was announced that 10 Safeway stores were set to close in the Lower Mainland.

The Sears store at Sevenoaks closed in 2017. A total of eight full-time and 61 part-time employees lost their jobs there.

Last February, the mall sold for $214 million. The new owner said he wants to build condos and other mixed-use buildings on the property.
