Two women trying to save a baby duck in Fishtrap Creek had to be rescued themselves Monday evening when they found themselves stranded on a small island as darkness approached.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue and paramedics crews were called to the park just after 8 p.m. by one of two women who had attempted to help a duckling that seemed to have been injured by a fish hook.

The women became mired in mud. Although they were able to extract themselves, they then found themselves on a small island. One of the women called 9-1-1 and relayed their location, but her phone soon died.

Crews were nevertheless able to find the women. To get to the pair, though, they had to crawl through blackberry bushes and brambles and use a ladder to reach the women. After about 45 minutes, the crews were able to help the women to safety, along with the small duck, which is in good condition and will be taken to Elizabeth's Wildlife Centre.
