A man who was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Abbotsford Tuesday evening has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

It was the second accident Tuesday in Abbotsford involving a car hitting a pedestrian. Early Tuesday morning, a 74-year-old man was struck and killed while walking along Blueridge Drive, just east of Townline Road.

The 53-year-old cyclist was riding westbound on Old Yale Road between Victoria and Janzen streets at about 8:30 p.m. and was apparently crossing the road when he was struck by a mid-sized vehicle also travelling west.

The driver of the car, a 52-year-old woman, was shaken but remained on the scene.

Preliminary reports indicate that the cyclist was wearing dark clothing and had no reflective gear or lights on his bike. It is not believed he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The man was first taken by ambulance to Abbotsford Regional Hospital, and was then airlifted from there to another Lower Mainland hospital.
