A Surrey-based police watchdog has cleared police of any wrongdoing in a police-involved shooting on March 17, 2024, in Guildford.

A public report issued by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) on Wednesday (Feb.12) states that there are no “reasonable grounds to believe that an officer may have committed an offence.”

Surrey Police Service responded to a call of a man walking outside of Guildford Town Centre who was reported to have a weapon on the evening of March 17.

Upon arrival, the officers found a man who allegedly had a weapon. Following an interaction with him, one of the officers discharged their firearm. The man was then transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The investigation gathered evidence from several sources, including video recordings, medical records, analysis of the scene and police reports. The IIO also spoke to witnesses.

The IIO was called in to investigate. The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC investigates all police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
