Charges laid in Crescent Way assault in Abbotsford

Emergency responders were on the scene of an assault on Crescent Way in Abbotsford early Sunday morning.

A 25-year-old Abbotsford man has been charged in relation to an assault that took place at a home in the 2400 block of Crescent Way over the weekend.

Andrew Phillip Meeches, formerly of Surrey, has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and disguise with intent.

Const. Ian MacDonald said police expect to recommend further charges.

Meeches is next scheduled to appear Tuesday in Abbotsford provincial court for a bail hearing.

According to the provincial court database, Meeches has prior convictions for assault causing bodily harm, breaching his bail and probation conditions, and fear of injury.

The incident occurred at about 2:45 a.m on Sunday, when police were called about an assault taking place on Crescent Way.

When they arrived, they found a 55-year-old victim and a 25-year-old suspect who were both seriously injured.

The suspect, who did not live at the residence, had allegedly come to the home armed with bear spray, a replica handgun, a machete, bolt cutters and a hammer.

Before police arrived, the suspect had been subdued by another occupant of the home who assisted the 55-year-old. The third man did not require hospitalization.

MacDonald said the victim is still recovering in hospital, and the motive for the attack is not yet clear.
