Chilliwack now has the worst COVID infection rate in the Lower Mainland, and new eastern Fraser Valley cases remain high, according to the latest data from the BCCDC.

From Sept. 28 to Oct. 4, Chilliwack had 38 daily cases per 100,000, Agassiz/Harrison had 26, Mission had 23, Abbotsford had 22 and Hope had 19.

Vaccination rates for the region remain well below the provincial coverage of 81 per cent (both doses, over 12-years old and up), though the rates are slowly increasing.

Chilliwack is at 72 per cent, Agassiz/Harrison at 75 per cent, Mission at 71 per cent, Abbotsford has the highest at 78 per cent and Hope has the lowest at 68 per cent.

Test positivity in all five municipalities is also above the provincial average of 7 per cent.

Data to Sept. 28, shows unvaccinated persons make up 70 per cent of new COVID cases, and 80 per cent of new hospitalizations.

Over the last month, unvaccinated people are 11 times more likely to become infected, 58 times more likely to be hospitalized and 53 times more likely to die.

New hospitalizations are elevated but stable provincially, and the number of admissions to critical care is stable (though varies widely by region). New deaths are low, but slowly increasing.

The Delta variant now accounts for 100 per of new cases across B.C.

Just over a week ago, new COVID restrictions were imposed on the eastern Fraser Valley region as unvaccinated people were clogging up local hospital ICUs.

A COVID outbreak was declared at Mission Memorial Hospital on Oct. 6.
