The Abbotsford school district has revealed the latest update to its enrolment procedures in its ongoing effort to control overcrowding in east Abbotsford school.

Administrative Procedure 336 has been tweaked and simplified in recent months to make it tougher for students to attend schools outside their catchment area.

Catchment students get first priority to enrol in their neighbourhood schools, including those who were unable to attend their neighbourhood school the year before.

Next, schools will consider applications from non-catchment students but once those students are enrolled in a school, they have to reapply each school year.

Those non-catchment applications will be decided at three different times, depending on how crowded the school in question is.

Low enrolment pressure schools will make the call by the end of February

Modest enrolment pressure schools will make the call by mid-June

High enrolment pressure schools will make the call at the beginning of September

Board chair Shirley Wilson said the district hasn’t determined exactly which schools will fall into which category but that should be determined soon after this year’s spring break (March 19 to 30).
