An Abbotsford Police officer has been charged with fraud and obstruction of justice after the alleged improper use of extended health benefits.

Const. Rob Thandi, a 20-year member of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD), was charged on Friday.

APD spokesman Ian MacDonald said it is alleged that Thandi used his extended health benefits fraudulently and attempted to interfere with the investigation into the matter.

MacDonald said information on the matter was provided to the APD on April 22. The APD then initiated both criminal and Police Act investigations, and the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner was notified on April 25.

Thandi was suspended with pay on May 23.

MacDonald said the Police Act investigation is continuing. The Abbotsford Police Board will be asked to review Thandi’s suspension and determine whether his pay will continue or be discontinued.

Under the Police Act, officers can face disciplinary action, separate from the outcome of the criminal charges, such as dismissal or demotion.
