Highway 1 will be closed through Abbotsford in the early morning hours of Sunday as a large addition to the city’s pedestrian and cycling infrastructure becomes a reality.
Crews are set to lower the Salton Road pedestrian and cycling bridge into place. To accommodate the work, Highway 1 will be closed between midnight and 6 a.m. between the McCallum and Sumas Way interchanges
Highway traffic will be routed along Marshall Road. The city hasn’t said when the new bridge will be open to the public.
The bridge, along with new separated bike lanes created along Salton Road both north and south of the highway, provides a direct pedestrian and cycling link between the University of the Fraser Valley and the Marshall Road corridor.
The cost for the four-metre wide bridge is $4.61 million. The city has received $1 million from the province for the project.
