An Abbotsford driver doing 202 km/h in a 100 km/h zone was among seven drivers who were charged with excessive speed and had their vehicles impounded recently on Kootenay roads.

The 41-year-old driver, who was travelling near Castlegar, lost his vehicle for seven days and was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed and a fine of $483. Police have requested a review of his driver’s licence.

“With warmer weather out, police are seeing the speeds increasing,” said Sgt. Chad Badry of RCMP West Kootenay Traffic Services.

Another vehicle was stopped because it only had one headlight working. During the subsequent investigation, police officers recovered over $700 in new tools still in their packages that were stolen from a Kootenay area hardware store.

“We are unable to release further details as the investigation is still ongoing,” said Badry. “The manager of the hardware store was definitely surprised and happy about the recovery.”
