Mission Fire Rescue crews were called out to the area of Cherry Avenue and Cedar Street early Thursday morning as an abandoned home was discovered ablaze.

At about 3:15 a.m. the department arrived to find flames and smoke visible on the exterior of the structure.

Assistant fire chief Norm MacLeod said 25 members were on scene and quickly got the blaze under control.

“It looks like the fire started on the exterior,” said MacLeod, adding there were no injuries resulting from the incident.

He said there are three houses in the area and “it appears” that they are up for rezoning.

“I believe they have a demolition permit already so it was just a matter of time before they take them down.”

The area also has patches of long grass that could have easily caught fire and spread, had the blaze not been discovered.
