Woman stabbed multiple times and baby taken

Abbotsford Police arrested a 24-year-old man this morning who allegedly stabbed his former partner multiple times and ran off with their 18-month-old baby.

Police received a 911 call at about 9 a.m. from a residence in the 2700 block of Blackham Drive at Baldwin Road.

The 23-year-old female caller said she had been stabbed and her baby had been taken by the father of the child.

Const. Ian MacDonald said the man and woman had previously been in a relationship and did not live in the same residence.

Police and BC Ambulance crews arrived, and the woman was treated for multiple stab wounds and then taken to hospital by air ambulance from a field behind Abbotsford Recreation Centre.

MacDonald said police were about to issue an amber alert for the missing child, when officers located the suspect, with the unharmed baby, at 9:40 a.m. in the backyard of a home on Marcliffe Place, not far from the stabbing.

The man was arrested without further incident. MacDonald said police are considering recommending charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, or even attempted murder.

"We will give careful consideration to anything in that range. It will depend on the evidence," he said.

He said the victim suffered "pretty significant injuries," but her current condition is not known.

Emergency crews move a stabbing victim to an air ambulance on a field behind Abbotsford Recreation Centre on Monday morning.
