Rally against youth sexual exploitation held Thursday
About 50 people took to the streets of downtown Abbotsford yesterday afternoon in a public rally to bring awareness to the sexual exploitation of youth and children.
The group met at the Abbotsford Community Services' Youth Resource Centre and Sgt. Casey Vinet of the Abbotsford Police Department Youth Squad led the group over to Five Corners carrying banners and signs.
The event, organized by the Fraser Valley Community Action Team (FVCAT), hoped to raise awareness about the aspects of youth sexual exploitation including that the average age for entry into the sex trade is 14 and that the online exploitation of youth has exploded in recent years making the sexual exploitation of youth less visible on the street.
March 10 to 16 is Stop the Sexual Exploitation of Children and Youth Awareness Week, proclaimed by the government of B.C.
